Southold Town recreation department introduces park passport

You know all of the local beaches. 

But now, Southold’s recreation department is inviting you to discover local parks and hiking trails as part of a new Park Passport program.

Recreation department supervisor Janet Douglass unveiled the program during a Town Board work session Tuesday.

Community members will be able to print a passport booklet or pick one up from the recreation department that highlights seven parks and preserves across the North Fork. Participants can then visit and hike, collecting a badge sticker from a kiosk along the trail

GLASTONBURY — Town officials say the resignation of firefighter James Stanley following an inappropriate comment he made at a Black Lives Matter rally and food drive on Sunday was the right move and that what he did should not reflect negatively on the town or its Fire Department.

Stanley resigned from the Fire Department on Tuesday after a cellphone video of him went viral, revealing that during the rally he said that people who overdose should be allowed to die rather than be treated with the drug Narcan, or naloxone, which can reverse the overdose.

9-story, 130-room hotel planned next to Short Pump Town Center

A Henrico-based firm wants to put up a hotel next to Short Pump Town Center as local hoteliers continue to bet on an industry rebound.

Kalyan Hospitality submitted plans to Henrico County last week for a 9-story, 130-room hotel at 11768 W. Broad St.

The undeveloped, 1.7-acre parcel sits between Short Pump Town Center and VCU Health’s Neuroscience, Orthopaedic and Wellness Center.

Michigan Gov. Whitmer lied about travels before Florida trip revealed: ‘I was here in town the whole time’

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer lied about not traveling out of state in a podcast interview last week, saying she was “here in town the whole time.”

Whitmer admitted earlier this week that she traveled to Florida in March, despite cautioning Michigan residents against traveling out of state. 

Last week, Whitmer joined the Michigan publication MIRS on their podcast, where she was asked by reporter Kyle Melinn if she was able to take any days off for spring break or over the past year amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The town of Gilbert is seeking applicants for four positions on its parks and recreation board.

The ideal candidate, according to the town, should be able to view issues from a big picture and longer-term perspective, be an advocate for parks and recreation in the community, be knowledgeable about the benefits that parks and recreation services provide a community, interact with citizens on parks and recreation issues, and have ongoing citizen-neighborhood contact on issues related to the board.

Hotel bed sheets turned into school shirts for Cape Town pupils

Danolene Johanessen, founder at Royal Kidz talks to Africa Melane about the wonderful initiative.

Through a collaboration with Marriott International and non-profit organisation Royal Kidz about 320 children at Klipheuwel Primary school in Durbanville received new school shirts, jackets, shoes, and socks most of which was made from repurposed hotel bed sheets.

Marriott International and Royal Kidz have been working together over the past 18 months, handing over a total of 3 000 similar donations to date to schools in under-served communities. Danolene Johanessen is the founder of Royal Kidz.
