Texas Tech elevating top assistant Mark Adams to head coach after Chris Beard’s departure


Texas Tech is elevating assistant coach Mark Adams to the top job to replace Chris Beard after Beard left to take the Texas job earlier this month, the school announced. Adams, the top assistant on Beard’s Red Raiders staff, has been with the program since Beard took over the gig in 2016. He was elevated to Associate Head Coach prior to the 2019-20 season.

A Texas Tech alumnus, Adams, who graduated from the school in 1979, is a long-time understudy of Beard. He served on Beard’s staff at Little Rock as an assistant in 2015-16 after a two-season stint

Texas hires Chris Beard from Texas Tech as next coach following Shaka Smart’s departure

Texas is hiring Texas Tech coach Chris Beard to the same position for the Longhorns, the school announced on Thursday. Beard will succeed Shaka Smart as the Texas coach after Smart left to take the Marquette job last month.

Beard is a University of Texas alumnus who has long been linked to the Longhorns as his star steadily brightened in recent years first with Little Rock and most recently with Texas Tech. The news of Beard’s move across the state comes on the same day his contractual buyout for another Big 12 program dropped from $5 million to $4 million.
