Longtime North Charleston recreation leader dies, remembered for love of community | News

NORTH CHARLESTON — Gary McJunkin, a longtime recreation and community leader in the Charleston region, died March 28. He was 89.

McJunkin, also affectionately known as “Mr. Mac,” served Lowcountry residents for 25 years as he oversaw the development of North Charleston ball fields and playgrounds and a wide range of recreational programs.

McJunkin, a Greenville native, served two years in the Army before returning to South Carolina and becoming involved with the Cooper River Parks and Playground Commission, which ran the North Area’s athletic programs before North Charleston’s incorporation in 1972.

Miami Beach spring break horror: Woman found dead in hotel room remembered as ‘funny and beautiful’

Loved ones of the 24-year-old Pennsylvania woman who was reportedly drugged and raped and was later found dead in a Miami Beach hotel room are remembering her as an “amazing human being” and a “beautiful girl.”

The Miami-Dade Medical Examiner’s Office is still working to determine Christine Englehardt’s cause of death after the young woman’s semi-nude body was discovered Thursday at the Albion Hotel in South Beach, according to reports.
