Air travel breaks record during Easter weekend as CDC updates safety guidance for fully vaccinated people

Travel is taking flight this spring.

The Transportation Security Administration reported more than 1.5 million people were screened during Easter weekend at airport checkpoints on Friday, a record since last March around the time the coronavirus started becoming widespread in the U.S.

CDC releases new guidance on travel for fully vaccinated people

The CDC announced Friday, fully vaccinated people can safely travel and are considered ‘low-risk’. The updated guidance comes as Eppley Airfield said air travel is taking off again. “We’re just wrapping up the spring break travel period, and we did see an increase of activity for that,” said Steve McCoy, Chief Information and Development Officer at Eppley. CDC updates travel guidance for fully vaccinated people. Here’s what you need to know.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention made a huge announcement on Friday: It’s considered low risk for fully vaccinated people to travel.

CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said during a press briefing that the new guidance is based on data that shows “real world” effectiveness of the COVID-19 vaccines. “Vaccines can help us return to the things we love about life, so we encourage every American to get vaccinated as soon as they have the opportunity,” Walensky said in a statement.

Michigan’s governor has blamed the state’s recent spike in cases on higher rates of travel, lower rates of mask wearing and previous success keeping cases low in the state, and experts are warning the state’s rise in COVID-19 cases could be a sign of things to come for the rest of the nation.

Fully vaccinated people can travel at low risk to themselves, CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said Friday, but travel still isn’t recommended at this time because of rising numbers of coronavirus cases.

The agency said that as long as coronavirus precautions are taken, including mask wearing, fully vaccinated people can travel within the United States without getting tested for Covid-19 before or self-quarantining after.

For international travel, fully vaccinated people don’t need a Covid-19 test prior to travel — unless it is required by the destination — and do not need to self-quarantine after returning to the United States. They … read more
