Flights, airport busy as air travel pandemic record set

The United States set another record for the number of air travelers since the coronavirus pandemic set in, although passenger numbers remain far below 2019 levels.

Nearly 1.67 million people were screened at U.S. airport checkpoints on Sunday, according to the Transportation Security Administration. That was the highest number screened since March 12 of last year when air travel began to plummet.

However, it was still 35% below the number of airport travelers reported on the comparable Sunday in 2019, according to TSA figures.

COVID-19 brought international travel to a screeching halt at Logan Airport. But there are signs it’s picking up

Airport officials said they are confident that Logan will eventually regain its status as a significant international airport as vaccination rates pick up, the pandemic recedes, and border restrictions are relaxed.

“The city of Boston is attractive, the economic fundamentals are sound, and the airlines are smart,” said Lisa Wieland, chief executive at the Massachusetts Port Authority, which operates Logan. “If you think of the industries that are concentrated here — higher education and hospitals — those are travel-intensive industries . . . the international carriers have reiterated their interest in resuming service at Logan.”

San Jose airport passenger traffic rises

SAN JOSE — Passenger trips at San Jose International Airport have begun to rise in 2021, offering hope that the South Bay travel hub can begin to banish a dreadful 2020 travel year that was hobbled by the coronavirus.

Logan Airport traveler numbers surge for school vacation week

School vacation is underway this week in Massachusetts and that means some families are headed out of state for the first time in a year.
