Excessive drinking preceded fatal Kona vacation rental fight

A 37-year-old Pittsburgh man appeared Wednesday in District Court for a preliminary hearing on a charge of manslaughter stemming from an altercation at a Kailua-Kona vacation rental that resulted in the death of his roommate.

Benjamin Fleming was arrested March 29 after Hawaii Police Department officers were called to the Kona Mansions Condominiums for an unconscious man who was not breathing. Medics, who were already on the scene, determined that the victim, identified as 30-year-old Abhishek Gupta, also of Pittsburgh, was already deceased.

Hawaii vacation rental occupancy rates outperform hotels

HONOLULU — Hawaii’s vacation rental market has outperformed hotels in occupancy rates in every month since October.

Vacation rental owners across the state have said the higher demand was prompted by pandemic-related attitude shifts that prioritize space and seclusion for getaways, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported Monday.

Other rental home operators have said that the pandemic-induced reduction in some hotel services, such as daily housekeeping, has decreased the service gap between homes and vacation rentals, the newspaper reported.

Piney Point concerns prompt vacation rental cancellations

PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) – It wasn’t long after the news of the Piney Point breach made national news that Jason Patino started getting phone calls.
